It's easy to start a blog or a Facebook page. It is EXTREMELY difficult to maintain an online presence without first creating a comprehensive plan. You most likely have a Facebook account, a Facebook Page, a LinkedIn account and a Linkedin Business Page. Perhaps you are on Google+, Google+ Page, Twitter, Flickr and have a Youtube account. The next question will be: how on earth will I find enough content to populate all of your accounts not to mention reply to comments and manage a Twitter feed.
